An Adoring Heart - Calvin Hoffman
God delights in you.
The definition of delight is to gain great pleasure from or to be pleased by.
With this in mind, how hard is it for you to believe the first sentence I wrote? Consider also, that God does not delight in what you can do for Him, or how you can prove yourself worthy of His delight. God simply delights in you. It’s true, and it’s something that God has truly been teaching me over the last year of my life.
I was in a meeting with a spiritual counselor a few months ago. We started out our time together like any other: with prayer. My counselor would lead me through a prayer practice of seeking God; not trying to bring all my needs and questions right away, but rather waiting in humble obedience for the Lord to direct the conversation.
During this session, God gave me a vision–and I don’t use that term loosely. In this vision, Jesus and I were in my kitchen, and we were slow dancing. To be completely honest, I was very hesitant to share what I had seen with my counselor. I thought to myself how embarrassing it could be to say out loud… but in that very moment, I realized something: that’s the kind of intimacy the Lord desires for He and I. That’s the kind of delight He has for me.
When God created the Heavens and the Earth, He said that it was good. When God created the first humans, he said that it was a very good–delight. His love for you is deeper than you realize. He’s jealous of your time and attention. He longs to walk the Garden of Eden with you–hand in hand. His delight for you is intensely personal and emotional–it’s not a generic kind of delight.
Delight is actually something the Lord invites us into with Him–it’s mutual. Delight is a choice to make, which carries supernatural joy in every season of life. It’s the joy that has you saying to your spouse, “I wouldn’t wanna’ go through this with anyone else.”
Have you ever heard that the “Joy of the Lord is our strength”? I have.
I received this vision in the midst of a painful season. My wife and I had just endured a miscarriage. I revisited the vision many times during that season, and it gave me supernatural strength and undeniable peace.
A great theologian by the name of Karl Barth, who wrote volumes upon volumes of theology, was once asked to sum up all he’d written in one sentence. His response was: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” So may this truth brings you into everlasting peace and into unwavering delight in your Father in Heaven.
God delights in you.

Spiritual Practice
Pray this prayer and spend a few moments in silence with Him.
Lord, quiet my mind and help me to embrace the delight that you have for me. Show me who you are and remind me who I am. I adore you, Jesus. Amen.
