Summer of Depth Devotional Day 3

Today is day 3 of the Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan. Let’s slow down and go deep with God right now. As you enter into this moment, invite God to speak directly to you…through his word and through his Holy Spirit. Like Samuel as a young boy, simply say, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3). Now open your heart and ears to hear.

Before anything else, slow down and read: Genesis 2:4-25

When you’re ready, continue with this devotional:

Genesis 2 feels like we took the the grand and glorious story from Genesis 1, and all the sudden put it in slow mo. We move from the wide-angle view of creation to the dust, the garden, the breath of God, the trees, the rivers, the work, the animals, and the first human relationship. It is not rushed. It is a detailed and intimate account of God’s design and plan taking shape.

Notice God’s pace of formation from the very beginning. He does not mass-produce or rush to create everything he possibly could. He forms. He plants. He places. He gives meaningful work. He even sets real limits. The garden is full of gifts, but one tree is off limits. In other words, God’s plan has always included both abundance and boundaries from the start.

Here’s the thing…our hurry hates boundaries. This slow creation pace from the garden is so hard for us. We want every tree, every option, every open door, every yes. But just as Adam and Eve would come to find out, limits are not always punishment. Sometimes they are the loving pace of formation that God wants for us. Sometimes, it’s God saying, you’re right where you ought to be.

A more intentional and purposeful life begins when we stop treating limits as enemies and start receiving them as invitations to slow down and trust the God who knows what we need.

Pause and Reflect: Where are you fighting a limit that God may be inviting you to receive?

Then consider praying this:

“God, help me to embrace the healthy limits in my life. Not as setbacks or as an excuse to be lazy, but as an invitation to trust and realize how you might be growing me right where I am.

Amen.”
