Summer of Depth Devotional Day 5
Today is day 5 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan. We’re heading into a holiday weekend filled with friends, family, food, and celebrating our nation’s independence. So, as the burgers go on the grill and the fireworks are ready launch, let’s not miss what God is saying amidst it all. Take the time to be with him today, thanking him for the nation we live in, and the freedom he offers to us. Let’s slow down and walk with him now.
Before anything else, slow down and read: Psalm 23
One of the most known scriptures in the whole bible, Psalm 23 defines the character of a God who care deeply for us. It does not begin with what we do for God. It begins with what God does for us. The psalm says He leads and He restores. He shepherds, provides, and makes us lie down.
If we’re honest, that phrase, "He makes me lie down," feels almost funny. Some of us don’t lie down all that often unless we’re forced to, and since when have we had the time to lay down in a green pasture. Often, even on holiday weekends, we keep moving until our bodies, emotions, or relationships finally pull the emergency brake. But the shepherd is not trying to shame the sheep for being tired. He is leading us to what He knows we need.
So what if we really did what He’s inviting us to do? Restoration requires enough stillness to receive it. So be still. Your soul cannot be restored at the speed of constant distraction and endless checklists. We may be able to function in hurry, but it’s challenging for us to be deeply shepherded there.
Yes, go to grocery store for the 8th time this week, and say yes to the 3 different BBQs, picnics, and pool parties, but don’t forget to find the time to seek true rest in the Lord. Rest that lead to clarity, direction, and deeper purpose.
The invitation of Psalm 23 is not to become passive. It is to become led. There is a difference. The good Shepherd knows when we need movement and when we need green pastures. Both are good and both are filled with his grace. Make sure you’re embracing both as you walk with him.
Now Pause and Practice: Take a slow walk or sit outside for five minutes today. Do not try to accomplish anything in this moment. Let God shepherd your thoughts and actions.
