Summer of Depth Devotional Day 15
Welcome to Day 15 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan. Some moments with God leave us encouraged. Others leave us changed. Yesterday’s sermon passage reminds us that transformation isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes God does His deepest work in the middle of a struggle. As you spend time with Him today, ask Him for the courage to be honest about where you’re wrestling. You may discover that God is much closer than you realize.
Now, let’s dive deep into His Word.
Before anything else, slow down and read: Genesis 32:24–31.
Jacob spent a lifetime running.
He manipulated. He deceived. He relied on his own strength to get what he wanted. But on this night, everything became still. Alone in the darkness, Jacob found himself wrestling, not simply with a man, but with God.
Let’s be real, it’s one of the most mysterious stories in all of Scripture, but it’s gold. Jacob refuses to let go until he receives a blessing. Then God asks him a surprising question:
“What is your name?”
Of course, God already knew Jacob’s name.
But Jacob needed to say it.
In the ancient world, names carried meaning. Jacob meant deceiver, heel-grabber, the one who was always striving, always grasping, always trying to control the outcome. Before God gives him a new name, Jacob has to honestly acknowledge the old one.
That’s often how transformation begins.
God isn’t waiting for perfect people. He’s inviting honest people. The places we try hardest to hide are often the very places where God wants to meet us. Before He changes us, He lovingly invites us to stop pretending and tell the truth about where we are.
Jacob walked away from that encounter with a limp. Every step afterward reminded him that he had met God. The limp wasn’t a sign that God had abandoned him. It became a reminder that God’s strength had met him in his weakness.
Maybe there are places in your own life where you’ve been wrestling with God. Don’t rush past them. Sometimes the struggle becomes the very place where God reshapes our identity and reminds us that our future no longer has to be defined by our past.
Continue Your Time with God
As you finish today’s reading, slowly pray through Psalm 51:1–3, 10–13. Allow David’s words to become your own as you invite God to continue His transforming work in your heart.
