Summer of Depth Devotional Day 12

Today is Day 12 of our Summer of Depth devotional and reading plan.

As you start this devotional today, resist the urge to rush through the moment. Slow your breathing, quiet your mind, and remember that God is not waiting for a perfect performance from you. He's inviting you into His presence…just as you are.

Ask the Holy Spirit to soften your heart as you read today. Pray that He would help you see not only what Jesus did, but also what His actions reveal about the heart of God.

Now, let's dive deep into His Word.

Before anything else, slow down and read: Mark 2:23–3:6.

The tension in this story goes way deeper than grain or performing miracles or even the Sabbath.

It's about two completely different ways of seeing people.

As Jesus and His disciples walk through the grain fields, the religious leaders are watching closely. Unfortunately they have ulterior motives, hoping to catch Jesus on a cultural, religious technicality. A little later, in the synagogue, there's a man with a withered hand. Again, they're watching Jesus, but not because they care about the man. They're hoping Jesus will give them a reason to criticize Him.

Meanwhile, Jesus sees the very person everyone else has overlooked.

Let’s reflect inward for a moment. It's striking how easy it is to become so focused on being right that we stop noticing the people standing right in front of us. The religious leaders knew the Scriptures and they knew the Sabbath. Neither of those are bad things, but somewhere along the way, they missed the heart of the God, the very heart they claimed to worship.

Jesus reminds them (and us) that God's commands have always been meant for the good of people. It’s about life, not about rules. Sabbath was never given to burden people. It was given as a gift…a rhythm that restores weary souls, delights in the Lord, and creates space for people to experience His goodness. It’s all about people.

So maybe it’s worth asking today: Is your walk with Jesus making you more aware of the people around you? As God slows your pace this summer, perhaps one of His greatest invitations is simply to notice the person you've been too busy to see.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You for always seeing people with compassion. Forgive us for the times we've become so distracted, hurried, or focused on ourselves that we've missed the people You've placed right in front of us. As we learn to slow down this summer, shape our hearts to look more like Yours. Help us become people who notice, who care, and who love well. Amen.
