Summer of Depth Devotional Day 55

Welcome to Day 55 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan.

There are parts of the Bible that feel comforting the moment we read them. And then there are parts we'd probably rather skip.

Words that challenge something we've believed for years. Verses that expose a habit we've gotten comfortable with. Teachings from Jesus that collide with what we want to do. If we're going to let God's Word actually form us, we need both.

Let's dive deep and “Eat this Book.”

Before anything else, slow down and read: 2 Timothy 3:14-17.

Paul is writing to Timothy, a younger pastor he has invested deeply in, and tells him to “continue in what you have learned.” Timothy has known the Scriptures since childhood, but familiarity with them isn't the finish line. Paul wants him to keep allowing God's Word to shape the person he's becoming.

Then Paul describes what Scripture actually does.

It teaches. It corrects. It trains. It equips.

That word corrects might be the one we'd rather leave out.

Most of us enjoy opening the Bible and finding something that confirms what we already believe. It's harder when Scripture confronts us. When it challenges the way we handle conflict, money, sexuality, forgiveness, anxiety, ambition, or the way we treat someone we don't particularly like.

But if Scripture only ever agrees with us, we should probably ask whether we're actually letting it speak.

Paul says “all Scripture is breathed out by God.” If that's true, then we don't come to the Bible only looking for thoughts we appreciate. We come ready to be taught, corrected, and trained by a God who sees our lives more clearly than we do.

And notice where all of this is headed. Paul says Scripture does this so that God's people may be “complete, equipped for every good work.”

Correction isn't the destination. Formation is. Equipping is. Holiness is.

God isn't trying to win an argument with us. He's forming us into people who increasingly know Him, trust Him, and live His way in the world.

So maybe part of learning to “Eat This Book” is slowing down enough to let Scripture disagree with us, challenge us, provoke us, and call us to action.

Practice:

As you read today, ask:

“God, is there anything in Your Word that I've been resisting?”

Don't rush past whatever comes to mind. Sit with it for a moment and ask Him to help you trust His way enough to follow it.
