Summer of Depth Devotional Day 19

Welcome to Day 19 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan.

Sometimes the hardest things to hear are the things we think we already know.

A familiar passage. A familiar person. A familiar truth. Over time, familiarity can make us less curious. We stop expecting God to surprise us, challenge us, or show us something new. As you read today, ask Him to give you a fresh openness to His voice.

Now, let's dive deep into His Word.

Before anything else, slow down and read: Mark 6:1–13.

Jesus returns to His hometown, and the people are amazed by what they hear. They recognize His wisdom. They know about the miracles. But instead of becoming more open to Him, they become offended.

They would have known His family. They remember where He came from. In their minds, many probably thought they already had Jesus figured out.

That is what makes this passage so challenging. The people were not lacking information about Jesus. Their familiarity had made them less willing to receive Him. They could not imagine that someone they thought they understood might still have something to reveal.

The same thing can happen to us. We can read a passage we have heard many times and assume there is nothing left to notice. We can reduce people to who they used to be. We can walk into church expecting to hear what we already believe instead of asking God to search us.

Listening requires humility. It means admitting that God may still speak through what feels familiar. It means leaving room for Him to challenge an assumption, deepen an understanding, or help us see someone differently.

Now look at what happens next in the passage. Almost immediately, Jesus sends the Twelve out. He tells them to travel light, trust God to provide, and keep going even when some people refuse to listen. They weren't responsible for controlling people's responses. They were simply responsible for being faithful.

Maybe that's a reminder some of us need today. We can't make people listen. We can't force hearts to change. But we can keep trusting, keep obeying, and keep taking the next step Jesus asks us to take. But if we’re going to do that, we need to stay humble enough to listen what God is truly saying…and who he truly is.

Practice:

Choose one verse from today's passage and read it three times.

After each reading, simply ask:

"Jesus, what are You inviting me to trust You with today?"

Then sit quietly for a minute before moving on. Don't worry about having all the answers. Just be open to whatever He wants to show you.
