Summer of Depth Devotional Day 20

It’s day Day 20 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan.

Have you ever finished a conversation and immediately wished you could take a few words back?

Most of us have. Sometimes the words come out before we've really listened. Other times, our reactions speak louder than our intentions. Before you read today, ask God to give you a heart that's willing to listen—not just to others, but to Him.

As the day comes to a close and we prepare for Sunday, let's dive deep into His Word.

Before anything else, slow down and read: James 1:19–27.

This is our first time in James this summer. James doesn't waste many words. He gets right to the point.

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."

What a profound recommendation. It's simple enough for a child to understand, but difficult enough that we'll spend our whole lives growing into it.

Think about how many moments could look different if we simply paused before responding. An argument. A frustrating email. A conversation with your spouse. A moment with your kids. So often, our first reaction isn't our wisest one.

James isn't just teaching us better communication. He's describing what God's work looks like in a transformed heart. As God's Word takes root in us, it begins to shape not only what we believe, but how we respond. We become less controlled by impulse and more formed by His Spirit.

Then James goes on. He reminds us that hearing God's Word is never the finish line. It's possible to know scripture well, attend church regularly, and still walk away unchanged. The goal isn't just to hear God's Word, it's to actually let it reshape the way we live.

So as you prepare for tomorrow, pay attention to the spaces between what happens to you and how you respond. Sometimes God does some of His deepest work in those quiet moments.

Practice:

In one meaningful conversation tonight or tomorrow, make it your goal to listen just a little longer than feels natural.

Before you respond, silently pray:

"Jesus, help me reflect You before I react."

Then answer with both truth and grace.
