Summer of Depth Devotional Day 24

Welcome to Day 24 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan.

Most of us don't plan to say something we'll regret. It usually happens in a moment. Someone hurts us. We feel misunderstood. Our patience runs out. Before we know it, words have escaped that we wish we could take back.

Today's passage invites us into a different way of living.

So, let's dive deep into His Word.

Before anything else, slow down and read: Ephesians 4:25–32.

Paul is writing to people whose lives have been radically changed by Jesus. Throughout this chapter, Paul reminds them that because they belong to Christ, they're learning to live differently than they used to.

That includes the way they speak, the way they handle anger, and the way they treat one another.

One line stands out:

"In your anger do not sin."

Paul doesn't pretend anger isn't real. There are things in this world that should grieve us. There are moments when hurt is unavoidable. But he also knows that what begins as anger can quietly become bitterness if we leave it unattended.

That's why he points us toward something better.

Instead of tearing one another down, Paul makes a huge plea that we actually build each other up. Instead of holding onto resentment, forgive. Instead of harshness, choose kindness and compassion. Not because people always deserve it, but because that's exactly how God has treated us in Christ.

There is often a small moment between what happens to us and how we respond. It may only last a few seconds, but it's enough time to invite the Holy Spirit into the conversation. Those quiet moments have a way of shaping us into people who look a little more like Jesus.

Practice:

The next time you feel frustrated today, don't rush to respond.

Pause for a moment and pray:

"Holy Spirit, help me respond the way Jesus would."

Then choose one act of kindness, even if it's as simple as listening a little longer, speaking a little softer, or extending forgiveness where it isn't expected.
