Summer of Depth Devotional Day 41
Today is Day 41 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan.
Embracing freedom takes trust.
Israel has been rescued from Egypt, but they are only a few weeks into life in the wilderness. They want to believe that God is with them, but their patience is thin. The miracle of the Red Sea is already behind them, and now hunger has become the loudest voice in the room. As you read today, pay attention to what fear does to their memory and what God does in response.
Let's dive deep into His Word.
Before anything else, slow down and reread the passage from Sunday: Exodus 16:1-12.
The Israelites begin grumbling against Moses and Aaron, but underneath their complaints is a deeper question: Can God really be trusted here?
It's remarkable how quickly fear reshapes their perspective. They remember Egypt as the place where they had food, while conveniently forgetting it was also the place where they cried out under slavery. Their circumstances have become so difficult that the past suddenly looks better than it really was.
God responds with incredible patience.
He doesn't shame them for asking. He promises to provide bread from heaven. But He doesn't send them a lifetime supply. He gives them enough for today.
That wasn't just about feeding hungry people. It was about forming trusting people.
For four hundred years, Israel had lived under Pharaoh, where survival depended on endless labor and someone else's control. Now God is teaching them to live as His people. Every morning they will wake up with the same opportunity: Will they trust that God will provide again today?
Today, that's the invitation for us as well.
Most of us would love God to hand us next month's answers, next year's provision, or a five-year plan. Instead, He often gives enough grace for today. Enough strength for today. Enough wisdom for today. Not because He's holding out on us or stringing us along, but because He's inviting us into a relationship where we learn to depend on Him daily…everyday, believing that his supplication is enough.
Practice:
Before you go to bed or start your day tomorrow, write down one specific way God provided for you. It may be something big or something easily overlooked.
Then thank Him for today's “bread” before asking Him for tomorrow's.
