Summer of Depth Devotional Day 42

Welcome to Day 42 of our Summer of Depth Devotional and Reading Plan.

We spend a lot of our lives trying to prove ourselves.

At work, in relationships, even with God. We want to know we're doing enough, measuring up, or making progress. But today's passage invites us to consider a different question altogether:

What if the Kingdom of God isn't something to achieve, but something to receive?

Let's dive deep into His Word to find out what He’s really saying.

Before anything else, slow down and read: Mark 10:13-31.

Mark places two very different stories side by side.

First, people begin bringing children to Jesus. The disciples try to send them away. Maybe they thought Jesus would feel bothered, or that Jesus only had time for “important” people, but Jesus is indignant. He welcomes the children and says, "Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."

Then, right after, a wealthy, respected man runs to Jesus with an important question: "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"

At first, he seems like the ideal disciple. He's sincere. He's moral. He's eager. But as the conversation unfolds, Jesus lovingly reveals the one thing this man cannot let go of. Mark tells us something beautiful before Jesus challenges him: "Jesus looked at him and loved him."

That's important.

Jesus isn't exposing the man's heart to shame him. He's inviting him into true life and freedom.

Consider why these stories are coupled together… Children come empty-handed. The rich man comes with accomplishments, security, and control. One picture reminds us that God's kingdom is a gift for everyone….no matter what. The other reminds us how difficult that can be when our hands are already full.

Most of us know what it's like to cling tightly to something that makes us feel secure. Sometimes it's money. Sometimes it's success, comfort, reputation, or even the illusion that we're in control. Jesus doesn't ask us to surrender those things because He wants less for us. He asks because anything we hold more tightly than Him will eventually keep us from experiencing the life He longs to give.

Reflection:

Take a quiet moment today and sit with this question:

"Jesus, what am I holding so tightly that it's becoming difficult to fully receive You?"

Don't rush to answer.

Simply listen, and trust that whatever Jesus reveals, He reveals because He loves you.
